Origin:Old English
Meaning:Wealthy guard
The name Edward is derived from the Old English elements ead, meaning "wealth" or "fortune" and weard, meaning "guard". Prior to the Norman Conquest, several Anglo-Saxon kings bore the name. The name was revived as a royal legacy after King Henry III named his son Edward; seven subsequent King Edwards followed. Though its popularity waned during the 20th century, in the 21st century, the name saw a revival in popularity after its use for the main character in the book and film series Twilight.
