Harvey comes from the Breton given name Haerviu, meaning "battle worthy" (from haer - "battle" and viu - "worthy"). It has also been used as a surname. It was introduced to England by settlers from Brittany following the Norman Conquest. Although it became rare during the later Middle Ages, it was revived in the 19th century.
