Origin:Hebrew
Meaning:One who seizes or supplants
Jacob is ultimately traced back to the Hebrew name Ya'aqov (יַ ֲעקֹב), meaning "supplanter" or "one who seizes". The English version, Jacob, comes from the Latin name Iacob, which itself is derived from the Greek version Iakob (ακώβ). In the Abrahamic faiths, Jacob is the son of Isaac and is father of the twelve founders of the twelve tribes of Israel. In England, Jacob was mainly regarded as a Jewish name until after the Protestant Reformation, when it came into common use by Christians. In the modern era, its popularity peaked in the early 2000s.
