Origin:Germanic; French
Meaning:Famous warrior, famous battle
Louis comes from the French form of the name Ludovicus, itself the Latinised form of the name Ludwig, Germanic name Chlodovech (elements hlud -"famous, renowned" and wig - "war, battle"). Louis was an extremely popular name amongst French royalty, as 18 kings bore the name. However, its general popularity waned in France after the French Revolution and guillotining of Louis XVI. The Normans originally brought the name to England, where the Lewis variation became common. In modern times, the name first peaked in popularity in the early 2000s before falling sharply; it is currently on the rise again.
