Origin:Welsh; Irish
Meaning:Noble, well born; born of the yew tree
Owen is the anglicised version of the Welsh name Owain and the Irish name Eoghan. Both names possibly are derived from the Latin name Eugenius, meaning "well born" or "noble" (from the Greek word eugenes - εὐγενής). The Irish version, Eoghan, also possibly means "born from the yew tree" from the Old Irish elements eó meaning "yew" and the suffix gan for "born". Owen peaked in popularity in the early 2000s and has fallen off since.
