Abigail is derived from the Hebrew name Avigayil (ֲא ִביגָיִל ), meaning "my father is joy," from the roots av (אָב), meaning "father" and gil (גִּיל), meaning "joy". In the Abrahamic religions, Abigail was a figure who eventually became the third wife of King David. It first became popular amongst the Puritans in England following the Protestant Reformation; its popularity was revived in the 20th century and hit its peak in the late 90s and early 2000s.
