Origin:Italian
Meaning:Song, melody
Although the name literally translates to "air" in Italian, it refers to a song or melody, as an aria is a type of vocal solo usually associated with opera. It is not traditionally used as a name in Italy and has only been in use as an English name since the 20th century, having risen sharply in popularity over the last 20 years. Its recent jump in popularity can likely be attributed to use of the name by several popular characters in media, such as Aria from the television drama Pretty Little Liars and the alternately-spelt Arya Stark from Game of Thrones.
