Clara is the feminine form of the Late Latin name Clarus, meaning "clear," "bright," or "famous". It has been in use as an English name since the Middle Ages, although originally in the alternate form Clare. Clara overtook it as the preferred spelling in the 19th century and it remained popular before beginning to decline in the 20th century. Since the start of the 21st century, it has been rising in popularity once again.
