Origin:Old English
Meaning:Prosperous in war
Edith comes from the Old English name Eadgyð, derived from the elements ead, meaning "wealth, fortune" and gyð, meaning "war," so it can be translated as "prosperous in war". The name was popular amongst Anglo-Saxon royalty and even remained common after the Norman Conquest. Although the name became rare after the 15th century, it was revived in the 19th century and peaked as one of the most popular girls' names at the start of the 20th century.
