Origin:Germanic
Meaning:Other
Ella is derived from the Norman form of the Germanic name Alia, thought to be derived from the element alja, meaning "other". It can also be used as a nickname for Eleanor, Ellie, and other names that begin with El- or end with -ella. The name was originally introduced to England by the Normans, although it fell out of use after the 14th century. It was revived in the 19th century and saw a big jump in popularity during the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
