The English feminine form of the Roman family name Aemilius, derived from the Latin word aemulus, meaning "rival". It is also associated with the Germanic-derived name Amelia, meaning "industrious". It was not common in England until after the German House of Hanover came to the British throne in the 18th century. It remained popular throughout the 19th century, dipping in the first half of the 20th century before rising to its peak in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
