Origin:Latin
Meaning:Prosperous, flourishing
Florence is derived from the Latin name Florentius (or the feminine form Florentia), which comes from the word florens, meaning "flourishing" or "prosperous". It can also be in reference to the city of Florence in Italy, such as in the case of famed nurse Florence Nightingale. The name was extremely popular in the early 20th century, but declined until the early 2000s, when it began to rise once more.
