Origin:Germanic
Meaning:Nobel type
Heidi is a German diminutive of the name Adelheid, which is ultimately derived from the Germanic name Adalheidis and means "nobel type" (from the elements adal - "noble" and heid - "kind, type"). The name first saw use in the English-speaking world in the early 20th century, following the release of the movie Heidi (1937), starring Shirley Temple. It fell in popularity in the early 21st century, but began to recover in the 2010s.
