Origin:Greek
Meaning:Rainbow
Iris means "rainbow" in Greek. Iris was the name of the Greek god of the rainbow and acted as a messenger to the gods. It can also be a reference to the flower or the coloured part of the eye, all of which are derived from the same source. The name was fairly popular in the early 1900s but dropped off until the start of the 21st century, when its popularity began to rise once again.
