Origin:Germanic / English; Latin
Meaning:Famous type / Rose (referring to the flower)
The name Rose was originally derived from a Norman form of the Germanic name Hrodohaidis, meaning "famous type," from the elements hrod, meaning fame and heid, meaning "kind" or "type". However, very early on the name also became associated with the flower rose, which derived its name from the Latin rosa. The name was revived in the 19th century, most likely with the flower in mind, as many other floral and botanical names became popular at this time. It remained popular throughout the early 20th century before declining steadily during the latter-half of the century. Since the late 1990s, the name has been rising in popularity once more.
